The Miracle of the Qur'ān
Chapter Three: An exploration of the greatest proof of prophethood — the Qur'ān's eternal, inimitable, and divine nature as Allah's own speech.
Chapter 4 Summary
The Greatest Miracle
The Qur'ān: The Supreme Proof of Prophethood
The Challenge (Taḥaddī)
There is widespread scholarly consensus that the greatest proof, sign, and miracle given to the Prophet (ﷺ) is the Qur'ān. Allah challenged all of mankind with its miraculous inimitability — meaning it is impossible to replicate in any way.
Three Divine Challenges
  • "If mankind and the jinn gathered to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it." (17:88)
  • "Produce ten surahs like it that have been invented." (11:13)
  • "Bring forth a surah like it." (10:38)
A Living Miracle That Endures
The Prophet's Own Words
Bukhārī and Muslim report: "Every Prophet was given miracles that convinced people to believe. The miracle given to me is the revelation Allah revealed to me. I hope to have the most followers on the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Dhahabī's Commentary (d. 748 h.)
Each prophet's miracle ended with his death, so few followed. Our Prophet (ﷺ) has a multitude of followers because his greatest miracle — the Qur'ān — remains after his passing, continuing to bring people to faith throughout the ages.
Scholarly Insight
The Qur'ān: Miraculous Yet Comprehensible
"Although the Qur'an is miraculous in a manner that has confounded the eloquent and paralyzed the orators from producing anything like it, that does not take away from it being Arabic, flowing in the style of Arabic speech, easy to comprehend… It is amazing to have a speech similar to human speech in language, meanings, and styles — understood and comprehended — yet humans are unable to produce a single Surah like it."
— Abū Isḥāq Al-Shaṭibī (d. 790 h.)
Al-Shaṭibī emphasizes a key point: the Qur'ān's miraculousness does not place it beyond human understanding. If it were incomprehensible, addressing humanity with it would be an unbearable burden — and Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity.
Defining the Miracle — Ibn Qāsim al-Najdī
Shaykh 'Abd al-Raḥmān b. Qāsim al-Najdī (d. 1392 h.) summarized the scholarly discussion: "A miracle is a supernatural matter coupled with an invincible challenge. The Qur'ān is eternally miraculous: it confounded the eloquent despite their ardent desire to oppose it."
Style & Eloquence
Its uslūb, balāghah, clarity, and coherence are unmatched in all of human speech.
Knowledge of the Unseen
It informs about matters of the unseen that no human could have known.
Awe in Hearts
Even its fiercest opponents acknowledged: "Indeed, his words are sweet and eloquent." — Al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīra
Ever Fresh
Its listener never tires of it; it remains new and fresh on the tongues of reciters across all ages.
Core Doctrine
The Qur'ān Is Allah's Speech — Al-Ṭaḥāwī
The Creed of the Muslims
Al-Imām al-Aajurī (d. 360 h.) stated: "The saying of the Muslims whose hearts did not deviate from the truth is that the Qur'ān is the speech of Allah, not created. The Qur'ān and Sunnah, the sayings of the Companions and the Imams of the Muslims all prove this."
Al-Ṭaḥāwī's Declaration (d. 321 h.)
"Whoever hears it and claims it is the speech of humans has disbelieved… Once Allah promised Saqar for those who said 'This is nothing but the speech of humans,' we knew and were certain that it was the speech of the Creator of humans, not comparable to the speech of humans."
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ Aal al-Shaykh commented: "The reason for the miraculous nature of Allah's speech is that it does not resemble human speech. The treasures of the Qur'an are inexhaustible and one never becomes tired of it no matter how much it is recited or explained."
Seven Special Characteristics of the Qur'ān
Sh. Ṣāliḥ Aal al-Shaykh identified unique characteristics that distinguish the Qur'ān from all human speech. Together, these characteristics — not any single one alone — constitute its miraculous nature.
Each characteristic is a distinguishing quality of Allah's speech that makes it unlike anything produced by human beings — collectively forming an irrefutable proof of divine origin.
Characteristic 1 & 2
All Arabic Dialects & Supreme Eloquence
All Classical Arabic Dialects
The Qur'ān contains words from every classical Arabic dialect — Quraysh, Hudhayl, Tamīm, Hawāzin, Yemen, Ḥimyar, and more. No human being can master all Arabic dialects in their words and nuances. Only the Creator of all creation could encompass such comprehensive knowledge.
The Highest Level of Eloquence
Every word in the Qur'ān — nouns, verbs, prepositions, even the letters of "Alif-Lam-Mim" — is at the highest level of eloquence. None of the Arabs who received the Qur'ān could find fault in its wording, unlike their criticism of each other's speech. Even opponents acknowledged its sweetness and beauty.
Characteristic 3 & 4
Perfect Meanings & Amazing Structure
The Special Characteristics of Its Meanings
When humans speak about creedal, legislative, or moral matters, there must inevitably be flaws and deficiencies. The Qur'ān alone is free of all contradiction. As Allah says: "Had it been from other than Allah, they would have found therein much contradiction." Its diversity of meanings — suitable for all human needs — proves it is Allah's own attribute.
Its Amazing Structure & Coherence
Al-Jurjānī's theory of naẓm (structure) demonstrates that the arrangement of verses and composition of sentences in the Qur'ān represents the ultimate in clarity of expression. Even specialized books of tafsīr — whether in grammar or rhetoric — begin strong but cannot sustain the level of the Qur'ān throughout. No human or jinn could always maintain such a level of structure.
Characteristic 5
Unmatched Authority over People's Souls
The Qur'ān holds an unparalleled authority over the human soul that no human speech can achieve. A non-Muslim woman who did not understand Arabic once stopped a khaṭīb after his sermon and asked: "Some of your words have a different tone and rhythm that distinguishes them from the rest of your speech — what are these words?" He replied: "These are the words of the Qur'ān."
Intertwined Themes
Verses of belief, law, behavior, promise, warning, and stories are woven together — addressing every type of soul simultaneously.
Speaks to All
Some souls respond to encouragement, others to warning, others to stories. The Qur'ān addresses all human diversity at once — only possible from the One who created the soul.
Cannot Escape It
"Indeed, this Qur'ān guides to that which is most suitable and right." (17:9) Any person who wants to escape it cannot — its verses encompass every dimension of the living soul.
Characteristics 6 & 7
Knowledge of the Unseen & Its Effect on Believers
What It Reports about the Unseen
The Qur'ān was revealed to an unlettered Prophet (ﷺ), yet contains matters whose full meaning only became apparent in the modern age. The "scientific miracle" of the Qur'ān is real — though theories must be subject to the Qur'ān, not the reverse. Economic, legislative, and creedal miracles all prove: "If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction."
Its Special Effect on the Believer
The more a believer engages with the Qur'ān, the more their love for Allah increases. Its commands, prohibitions, and information are "guidance and healing for those who have believed." (41:44) When a believer recites its verses, "it increases them in faith" — a special authority that takes them from darkness into light in both knowledge and practice.
Ibn Taymiyyah
The Meanings Are the Most Miraculous Aspect
"The miraculousness in its meaning is greater and more significant than the miraculousness in its wording. All of the wise men of the nations are unable to come up with meanings like it to a degree that is greater than the inability of the Arabs to come up with wordings like it."
— Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 h.)
Ibn Taymiyyah identifies the Qur'ān as miraculous from multiple angles: its wording, structure, eloquence, its information about Allah's names and attributes, its knowledge of the past and future unseen, the Hereafter, its rational parables, and its legislative wisdom. All aspects discussed by scholars are valid proofs — there is no contradiction between them.

Ibn Taymiyyah also notes: The Prophet's bold declaration in Makkah — with few followers — that all of humanity and jinn could never produce its like, could only have been made with absolute certainty and divine knowledge. Doubt would have silenced him for fear of exposure.
Al-Suyūṭī's Summary: 14 Key Aspects of Miraculousness
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī (d. 911 h.) wrote one of the finest works on this subject, identifying thirty-five aspects of the Qur'ān's miraculousness. Below are fourteen of the most important:
Preservation & Ease of Memorization
Preserved Through the Ages
Unlike all other scriptures, the Qur'ān has been guarded from addition, subtraction, alteration, and distortion across centuries. Allah says: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian." No one has been able, by the grace of Allah, to tamper with it.
Easy to Memorize
Allah says: "And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance." No lone person from other nations memorized their scriptures — yet the Qur'ān is memorized by multitudes, including children, in short periods of time. Ibn 'Aṭiyyah explains: its excellent structure and noble meanings give it a profound impact on hearts and minds — a visible phenomenon requiring no further proof.
A Concluding Reflection
"Anyone who reflects on the beauty, awesomeness, clear expression, and the various ways that the Qur'ān addresses humanity will realize that it is miraculous in many respects… Its listener does not bore of it and it has always been and will always be new and fresh in the ears of the listeners and on the tongues of the reciters."
— Shaykh 'Abd al-Raḥmān b. Qāsim al-Najdī (d. 1392 h.)
Divine Origin
The Qur'ān is miraculous because it is the eternal, uncreated speech of Allah — unlike anything produced by human beings.
Eternal Challenge
The challenge to produce even one Surah like it stands unanswered — from the time of revelation until today and forever.
Inexhaustible Treasure
Books of tafsīr from the earliest times until now continue to extract its wonders. Its treasures are inexhaustible.
