Contemplating Surah al-An'ām
Day 6 of our Qur'ānic journey takes us through the entirety of Surah al-An'ām, a foundational Makkan chapter revealed in the fourth year of Prophethood. This Surah stands as the Makkan equivalent of Surah al-Baqarah among the Medinan revelations, establishing the core principles of Taqwā through logical arguments and divine commandments.
The Significance of Surah al-An'ām
Al-Imām Abu Isḥāq al-Shāṭibī described Surah al-An'ām as "the equivalent amongst the Makkan Suwar of Surah al-Baqarah amongst the Medinan Suwar." Revealed around the 55th in order after Surah al-Ḥijr, this chapter laid the groundwork for the principles of Taqwā that would later be fully developed in Surah al-Baqarah after the Prophet's migration to Madīnah.
The Surah's primary purpose is to establish belief in Tawheed through rational proofs, demonstrating that Allah encompasses all perfections including creation, annihilation, and the power to resurrect. Everything in this Surah builds toward the ten commandments presented in verses 151-153.

Two Powerful Methods of Invitation
Throughout Surah al-An'ām, Allah employs two complementary rhetorical methods to establish the truth and guide humanity toward faith. These approaches work together to create an irrefutable case for Tawheed.
Uslūb al-Taqrīr
The method of declaring who Allah is. Allah refers to Himself in third-party tense: "It is He (i.e., Allah) who…" appears 28 times throughout the Surah, establishing divine attributes through declaration.
Talqin-al Ḥujjah
The method of prompting people to speak truth. "Say to them" appears in 32 verses (38 total occurrences), teaching the Prophet how to engage with polytheists through guided dialogue and logical questioning.
The Example of Prophet Ibrahīm
At the heart of Surah al-An'ām (verses 74-83) stands the pivotal example of Prophet Ibrahīm establishing proof against his people. This passage demonstrates the practical application of rational argumentation in calling to Tawheed.
Ibrahīm's methodology shows how clear rational evidence leads to recognition of Allah's lordship. His journey from questioning the worship of celestial bodies to proclaiming pure monotheism provides a timeless model for establishing faith through contemplation of creation.

Responsibility of Callers
Callers to truth are responsible for conveying the message and reminding people, not for holding them accountable. Advising is a powerful tool for awakening the heedless.
The Greatest Gift
The greatest gift a person can receive in this life is guidance on the straight path. All prophets shared the common message of monotheism despite differences in specific laws.
Individual Accountability
Everyone will be resurrected individually on the Day of Judgment, stripped of positions and titles, accountable alone. Engage in self-reflection now.
Divine Traditions
A divine constant: raising adversaries against prophets and followers because truth is recognized by its opposition to falsehood. Expect resistance when calling to truth.
Guidance and Misguidance
Both misguidance and guidance come from Allah, created and ordained by His wisdom, yet they result from the servant's actions by their choice after Allah's will. This profound truth requires deep contemplation.

Key Principle: Allah's guardianship over believers is proportional to their righteous deeds. The more righteous deeds increase, the more His guardianship increases, and vice versa. "For them is the abode of peace with their Lord, and He is their protector because of what they used to do."

Practical Guidance for Daily Life
Permissibility Principle
The foundational principle in matters of food and things is permissibility unless expressly prohibited by Sharia. This provides ease and clarity in daily decisions.
Dealing with Wealth
Whether in prosperity or constraint, maintain gratitude and trust in Allah's wisdom. Financial situations are tests, not indicators of faith or divine favor.
Avoiding Sin
Prohibiting the approach to indecencies is more emphatic than merely prohibiting their commission, as it includes forbidding the precursors and means leading to them.
Justice in Commerce
Those with businesses involving measurement and weighing should fear Allah and beware of cheating. Give full measure and weight with justice.
Speaking Truth
Commit yourself to speak justly in all matters, even against yourself. Truth-telling is a fundamental characteristic of the believer.
Sincere Devotion
Dedicate all actions and concerns to Allah alone. To Him alone, the servant turns in prayer, worship, rituals, sacrifices, and all acts of closeness.
Divine Justice and Mercy
1x
Evil Deed
Rewarded with its like - perfect justice
10x
Good Deed
Minimum multiplication - abundant mercy
700x
Sincere Acts
Can be multiplied even more by Allah's grace
Part of Allah's justice and kindness is that He rewards an evil deed with its like, and a good deed with ten times its like, which is the least multiplication for good deeds. This demonstrates the overwhelming mercy that characterizes divine judgment.
Do not procrastinate in repentance and performing righteous deeds; a time may come when you are not able to do them. The door of repentance remains open, but none knows when it will close.
