Revealed in year 5 after Hijrah after the Battle of Banī Muṣṭaliq, when the head of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy, said what is mentioned in verse 8. Sūrah al-Taghābun — Mutual Disillusion
There is well-known scholarly differing on whether this Sūrah was revealed in Makkah or Madīnah. Named "Al-Taghābun" — one of the names for the Day of Judgment — when differences among people become apparent and disbelievers suffer loss by forsaking faith. This term is unique to this Sūrah.

Contemplate, Comprehend, Apply
The following reflections draw out the living lessons from each passage — moving from understanding to transformation.
Al-Mujādilah through Al-Taḥrīm
Reflections: Al-Mujādilah 1–21
Verses 1–6: Allah's Kindness to the Oppressed
Allah's kindness toward the oppressed is evident in answering their prayers. The variety of expiations for ẓihār according to one's capability reflects Allah's mercy in relieving hardship.
Verses 7–11: Divine Omniscience
Though Allah is Exalted above His creation, He is all-knowing of them and nothing is hidden from Him. Believers are commanded that their secret counsels be in righteousness and piety. Among the etiquette of gatherings: making space for others.
Verses 12–21: Grace, Allegiance & Victory
Allah's grace is shown by teaching companions not to overburden the Prophet ﷺ. The allegiance of Jews is characteristic of hypocrites. The ultimate loss of disbelievers and victory of believers is a divine tradition — delayed but never absent.
Reflections: Al-Mujādilah 22 — Al-Ḥashr 16
Love & Faith
Love that does not make a Muslim denounce a disbeliever's religion is prohibited. Natural love for a non-Muslim relative is permissible. The bond of faith is the strongest link among the people of faith.
Allah's Decree
The ascendancy of falsehood may seem unending until defeat comes unexpectedly. Part of Allah's decree involves alleviating calamities through lesser hardships.
Islam's Beauty in Wealth
One of Islam's beauties is considering the needy for wealth allocation, directing spoils of war to them rather than the self-sufficient wealthy. Preferring others over oneself is vividly demonstrated by the Anṣār.
Hypocrites' Bonds
The bond of faith is unaffected by time or place. The hypocrites' friendship with Jews is a superficial bond that dissolves during hardships. Jews are described as cowards in battle, relying on fortifications for protection.
Reflections: Al-Ḥashr 17–24
Self-Accountability
A sign of Allah's guidance is a believer's self-accountability in this world before the Day of Judgment.
The Qur'ān's Impact
The profound impact of the Qur'ān on a great mountain is a reminder that humans, being more susceptible, should be even more moved.
Allah's Beautiful Names
The names — the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner — reflect the stages of creation: from decreeing, to bringing into existence, to giving it a unique form. Mentioning one implies the others.
Reflections: Al-Jumu'ah & Al-Munāfiqūn
The Prophet's ﷺ Immense Favor
The immense favor of the Prophet ﷺ on humanity — rescuing them from the darkness of ignorance. Guidance is a favor from Allah alone, sought from Him and attracted by obedience to Him.
Friday Prayer Obligation
The obligation to hasten to Friday prayer after the call and the prohibition of worldly activities except for a valid excuse.
The Inner Self
A Sūrah dedicated to the hypocrites highlights their danger and concealed nature. The real value is in the rectitude of the inner self, not in the beauty of appearance or eloquence of speech.
Reflections: Al-Munāfiqūn 5–11 & Al-Taghābun
Traits of Hypocrites
Ignoring advice and arrogance are characteristics of hypocrites. Economic blockade of Muslims is one of their strategies. Wealth and children become dangerous when they distract from the remembrance of Allah.
The Day of Judgment
It is by Allah's decree that people are divided into the wretched and the blissful. Remembering the loss of people on the Day of Judgment aids in performing righteous deeds.
Destiny & Generosity
The messengers' role is to convey; guidance is in Allah's hands. Belief in destiny brings tranquility. Obligations are within the capacity of the obligated. Spending in Allah's way multiplies the reward.
Reflections: Al-Ṭalāq & Al-Taḥrīm
Al-Ṭalāq 1–5
The address to the Prophet ﷺ is for his Ummah unless specific exclusivity is proven. Accommodation and maintenance are mandatory for a revocably divorced woman. Encouragement toward witnessing prevents disputes. Piety carries immense benefits and greatness.
Al-Ṭalāq 6–12
No obligation for a pregnant woman to breastfeed if divorced. Obligations are only within one's capability. Belief in Allah's power and comprehensive knowledge brings contentment and tranquility of the heart.
Al-Taḥrīm 1–7
The legitimacy of expiation for oaths. The Prophet's ﷺ esteemed position before his Lord and His defense of him. His kindness toward his wives involved overlooking some mistakes to maintain affection. The believer's responsibility for himself and his family.
Al-Taḥrīm 8–12
Sincere repentance is the cause of all goodness. The struggle of knowledge and the struggle of the sword are both indispensable. Kinship benefits no one on the Day of Judgment if separated by religion. Modesty and avoiding suspicion are traits of righteous believing women.
The Unifying Message of Day 27
From the laws of family life to the expulsion of treacherous tribes, from the etiquette of gatherings to the reality of the Day of Judgment — these Sūrahs call every believer to live with awareness of Allah, loyalty to His Messenger ﷺ, and sincere brotherhood with the faithful.
Divine Law
Rulings that bring justice, mercy, and order to human life.
Community Ethics
The etiquette of gatherings, loyalty, and disavowal for Allah's sake.
Household Guidance
Preparing the Muslim family as the foundation of a righteous society.
Eternal Accountability
Every soul will stand before Allah — prepared by Taqwā and sincere repentance.
