Day 21: Sūrah al-Aḥzāb · Sūrah Saba' · Sūrah al-Fāṭir
Three chapters united by a profound theme — Allah's care, His universal laws of gratitude and ingratitude, and His vast mercy. Together they address Tawḥīd, Prophethood, and the Hereafter from strikingly different angles.
Allah's vast mercy is the central theme, woven through every passage — from His signs in creation to the reward of the righteous.
Sūrah al-Aḥzāb: The Confederates
Chapter 33
A confederation of tribes — Quraysh, Kinānah, and Ghaṭfān — rallied against the Muslims at the instigation of the Yahūd, forming an army of 10,000. They laid siege to al-Madīnah for 20–30 days, making the Battle of the Trench one of the most difficult trials the early Muslim community faced.
The Sūrah addresses purifying the Islamic community from remnants of ignorance, revealing the secrets of the hypocrites, and declaring key family-related laws — all while urging believers to remember and sanctify Allah.
Objectives of Sūrah al-Aḥzāb
Purify the Community
Abolish inherited customs of ignorance: adoption practices, Zihar (pre-Islamic divorce), and false beliefs such as a wise man having two hearts.
Expose the Hypocrites
Reveal how forces of evil rallied against the Muslims and how Allah's mercy manifested in supporting His allies — fulfilling His promise of victory.
Declare Family Laws
Regulations for women including modesty, the veil (ḥijāb), waiting periods, and guidelines for the Prophet's ﷺ household.
Honor the Prophet ﷺ
Urge believers to remember Allah, follow the Prophet ﷺ, and send prayers and peace upon him — honoring his status with Allah and in the higher assembly.

Al-Aḥzāb Verses 1–6: Foundations of Obedience
No One Is Above Accountability
Allah commanded His Prophet to fear Him so that no one would refrain from advising and reminding: "O Prophet, fear Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites."
Disbelievers Unfit for Consultation
Disbelievers and hypocrites are not suitable for consultation in religious matters. The Prophet's ﷺ wishes must take precedence over personal desires.
Reliance on Allah
"Rely upon Allah; and sufficient is Allah as a Disposer of affairs." Whoever relies on Allah, He will make a way out from every hardship. The Prophet's ﷺ wives are honored as mothers of the believers.
Al-Aḥzāb Verses 7–22: The Battle of the Trench
1
Severe Trial
"There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking." The Battle of the Trench was among the most difficult for Muslims. Allah tests His servants to distinguish the truthful from the liars.
2
Hypocrisy Exposed
The hypocrites said: "Allah and His Messenger did not promise us but delusion." They had made a covenant with Allah not to flee — yet broke it. The hypocrite has no covenant with the Creator, let alone with creation.
3
The Prophet ﷺ as Model
"There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day." Fleeing trials does not extend life; lifespans are predetermined.
Al-Aḥzāb Verses 23–35: Companions & the Prophet's Household
The Companions' Great Status
"Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow to the death, and among them is he who awaits his chance." Allah's commendation for the companions is a great honor — anyone who slanders them has denied the Qur'ān.
Allah's power is limitless: "And Allah is over all things competent." The misdeed of the knowledgeable is worse than that of the ignorant.
The Prophet's Wives
The Qur'ān's guidance for Muslim women includes forbidding soft speech to non-mahram men, ordering to remain at home except when necessary, and forbidding tabarruj (display of beauty) — identified as a characteristic of the age of ignorance.
The principle of equality between men and women in deeds and recompense is affirmed, except for what the Sharī'ah has specified for each.
Al-Aḥzāb Verses 36–54: Surrender & the Prophet's Special Status
Obligatory Surrender
"It is not fitting for a believing man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger, to have any option about their decision." Submission to Sharī'ah is the essence of belief.
The Prophet's ﷺ Station
"O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner, and as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as a lamp spreading light."
Purity of Interaction
"When you ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts." Every means that keeps men away from non-mahram women is a purification for both hearts.
Al-Aḥzāb Verses 55–73: Ḥijāb, Hypocrisy & the Great Trust
1
The Ḥijāb
"Tell your wives and daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves part of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused."
2
End of the Hypocrites
The hypocrites and spreaders of sedition in al-Madīnah are warned of destruction. "You will never find in the way of Allah any change." Allah's laws are constant and unchangeable.
3
The Great Trust
"Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man undertook to bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant." Do not follow any leader in disobedience to Allah.
Sūrah Saba': Gratitude, Tawḥīd & the Day of Judgment
Chapter 34
Sūrah Saba' addresses the three main themes of the Makkan chapters: Tawḥīd, Prophethood, and the Day of Judgment. Its primary focus is Tawḥīd and Shirk — especially in its opening verses, verse 22, and verses 40–41 regarding those who claimed to worship angels but were actually worshipping devils.
The Sūrah opens with the disbelievers' denial of the final hour (verse 3) and concludes with their attempt to profess belief at a time when it will no longer benefit them (verse 53).
Main Themes of Sūrah Saba'
Gratitude Retains Blessings
Reacting to Allah's blessings with gratitude causes them to be retained (verses 10, 13, 15). Ingratitude causes their departure — and such a person is a loser in this world and the next (verses 1–18, 34–35).
Only Allah Knows the Unseen
The Sūrah emphasizes in multiple places that only Allah knows the unseen (verses 3, 7, 29, 53–54). The Jinn's subjugation to Sulaymān refutes those who worship the Jinn.
Doubts About Judgment Day
The disbelievers' denial of resurrection is refuted by drawing attention to Allah's power to create what is greater than them — as evident in the heavens and the earth around them.
Objectives of Sūrah Saba'
01
Affirm the Resurrection
The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to swear by the resurrection, arguing against denial by pointing to Allah's power in creating the heavens and earth.
02
Illustrate Gratitude vs. Ingratitude
The stories of Sulaymān and the people of Saba' illustrate how blessings are preserved through gratitude and lost through ingratitude.
03
Establish Tawḥīd
Proofs of Allah's lordship negate the worship of anything other than Him by proving the incapacity of idols to perform any function of lordship.
04
Invite to Belief
Invite the polytheists to believe in Allah, devote worship solely to Him, and reflect on the Prophet's ﷺ integrity and trustworthiness among them.
Saba' Verses 1–22: Prophets Dāwūd & Sulaymān
Allah's Honors to His Prophets
Allah honored Dāwūd with prophethood and kingship, subjugating mountains and birds to praise with him, and softening iron for him. He honored Sulaymān with prophethood, kingdom, and the subjugation of the Jinn — a refutation of those who worship the Jinn.
The requirement to thank Allah for His blessings is central. Security is among the greatest blessings Allah bestows on His servants.
Exposing Polytheism
The bases of polytheism are exposed: claiming idols have sovereignty, share in Allah's dominion, or can intercede with Him. True faith protects from following Satan's temptations by Allah's permission.
Allah's exclusive knowledge of the unseen is affirmed — negating any claims by jinn or others to possess it.
Saba' Verses 23–54: Accountability & the Day of Judgment
No Disavowal Exempts
The disavowal between followers and those they followed does not exempt any of them from their responsibility. Followers blaming leaders for misguidance will not avail them before Allah.
Wealth & Spending
Luxurious living distances one from submitting to the truth. A believer benefits from wealth and children; a disbeliever does not. Spending in Allah's cause leads to replenishment in this world and reward in the Hereafter.
The Day of Terror
The spectacle of the disbelievers' terror on the Day of Judgment is immense. The place for benefiting from faith is this world — the abode of action. Blind following of ancestors diverts from guidance.
Sūrah Fāṭir: The Originator
Chapter 35
Also: Sūrah al-Malā'ikah
Estimated to be the 43rd Sūrah revealed, between Sūrah al-Furqān and Sūrah Maryam — between year 4 of the prophethood and the Hijrah to Abyssinia. Its connecting thread is Allah's Mercy, mentioned throughout: verses 3, 9, 11, 12, 13, 27, 28, 41, and 45.
The Sūrah begins and ends with Allah's Mercy: "None can withhold or extend His Mercy, save He; if He were to seize people for what they've done, He wouldn't leave a creature on the earth."

Al-Tawḥīd
Allah's Oneness — the foundation
These three core subjects of the Qur'ān — Tawḥīd, Risālah, and Ma'ād — are woven together by the thread of Divine Mercy, which is the Sūrah's defining focus.
Objectives of Sūrah Fāṭir
Signs of Allah's Omnipotence
Diversity in fruits, colors, tastes, mountains, people, animals — all witness Allah's existence, magnificence, and majesty. These universal evidences of His Oneness are presented so that people may be guided.
Praise the Righteous, Warn the Deniers
Those who fear Allah, purify themselves, and respond to the Prophet's ﷺ call are praised and their rewards detailed. The deniers are warned with prepared punishment.
Believers vs. Disbelievers
The significant difference is illustrated by comparing the blind with the seeing, darkness with light, and life with death — making the contrast unmistakable.
Fāṭir Verses 28–32: The Most Hopeful Passage
"Knowledge of the religion should cause a person to fear Allah." — Verse 28
In verse 32, the three levels of those chosen by Allah are mentioned — said to be one of the most hopeful passages in the Qur'ān. It begins by mentioning the believers who wrong their own selves as being among those chosen for guidance.

1
Those Who Wrong Themselves
Yet still chosen for guidance — the most hopeful category
2
Those Who Are Moderate
Balanced in their deeds and worship
3
Those Who Excel in Good
By Allah's permission — the foremost in righteousness
Fāṭir Verses 39–45: Allah's Knowledge & Patience
Disbelief Leads to Loss
Disbelief is a reason for Allah's disdain and a path to loss and misery. Idolaters have no logical or scriptural evidence for their idolatry. Allah's planning against the oppressors leads to their destruction, sooner or later.
Nothing Beyond Allah's Power
It is forbidden to hasten punishment — everything has a determined term. "But He postpones them for a specified term. When their time comes, then indeed Allah has been seeing of His servants." Time is a trust; wasting it leads to regret when it is too late.
Key Lessons Across All Three Chapters
Surrender to Allah
Submission to Allah's commands — not personal desire — is the mark of true belief and the path to His help.
Gratitude Preserves Blessings
Gratitude retains Allah's favors; ingratitude removes them. This universal law runs through all three Sūrahs.
Allah's Boundless Mercy
Even those who wrong themselves are included among those chosen for guidance. Allah's mercy encompasses all things.
Accountability Is Certain
The Day of Judgment is real. Disbelievers will attempt to profess faith when it no longer benefits them. Action belongs to this world alone.
