Sūrah al-Ḥajj & Sūrah al-Mu'minūn — revering Allah by honoring what He has made of great importance, and the invitation to worship Allah alone, adorning oneself with the qualities of righteousness.
Day 17
Sūrah 22 & 23
Overview
Two Sūrahs, One Unified Message
Sūrah al-Ḥajj (Ch. 22)
Estimated the 103rd Sūrah revealed, between Sūrah al-Nūr and Sūrah al-Munāfiqīn. Uniquely contains two places of prostration — the only Sūrah named after one of the five pillars of Islam.
Sūrah al-Mu'minūn (Ch. 23)
Opens with eleven verses describing the believers and their reward. The Prophet ﷺ began the morning prayer with it on the day of the conquest of Mecca. Its structure contrasts the traits of believers with the devastating outcomes of disbelief.
Sūrah al-Ḥajj
Structure & Symmetry of Sūrah al-Ḥajj
The Sūrah's beginning and ending mirror each other beautifully: it begins with the command to have Taqwā (verse 1) and concludes with the command to enact the greatest characteristics of Taqwā (verse 78). Its opening and final verses both describe spectacles of sheer magnificence relating to Allah's signs and the Day of Judgment.
Sūrah al-Ḥajj
Main Themes of Sūrah al-Ḥajj
Resurrection & the Hour
Evidence for resurrection, the coming of the Hour, and the initial creation — including rain reviving dead earth as tangible proof.
The Believers & Disbelievers
The state of disbelievers on the Day of Judgment in the most degrading forms, versus the bliss of believers in the finest dwellings and adornments.
Ḥajj & Sacred Rites
Legislating the rulings of Ḥajj and sacrificial offerings, encouraging veneration of sacred rites, and reminding of Allah's blessings in legislating Ḥajj.
Permission to Fight
Legislating Jihad to repel oppression, promising divine support for believers, and ultimate victory over those who unjustly expelled them from their homes.
Sūrah al-Ḥajj
Unique Distinctions of Sūrah al-Ḥajj
Only Pillar-Named Sūrah
It is the only Sūrah in the Qur'ān named after one of the five pillars of Islam — the Ḥajj pilgrimage.
Two Prostration Verses
Unique in containing two verses of prostration, making it singular among all Sūrahs of the Qur'ān.
Permission to Fight
Includes verse 39 — the first verse granting permission to fight after years of persecution and oppression in Mecca.
Stories of Destroyed Cities
Recounts destroyed nations to demonstrate Allah's way in punishing disbelievers, console the Prophet ﷺ, and reassure the patient believers.
Sūrah al-Ḥajj — Broader Overview
The Broader Message of Sūrah al-Ḥajj
The Sūrah urges fear of Allah and warns of the Day of Judgment's terrors. It argues against polytheism, emphasizing that devils offer no protection. It reminds of Ḥajj's benefits and concludes by assuring believers of Allah's support, naming them Muslims — a people chosen for the true faith.

Contemplation Insights: The Hour & Creation
Key Reflections
Prepare for the Day of Judgment with the provision of piety
The horrors of the Hour: nursing mothers forget their infants, pregnant women drop their loads
Gradation in creation is a divine practice
Rain reviving dead earth is tangible proof of resurrection
Three Core Lessons
1
Resurrection is affirmed
"O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing."
2
Speaking without knowledge is forbidden
Sanctity of speaking about Allah's law requires divine revelation or authentic prophetic statement.
3
Allegiance to devils leads to Hellfire
"Whoever turns to him will misguide him and will lead him to the punishment of the Blaze."
Page 333 · Al-Ḥajj 6–15
Contemplation Insights: Guidance & Arrogance
Causes of Guidance
Guidance comes through knowledge leading to truth, a guide directing toward it, or a trusted book. Arrogance is the trait that prevents success in truth.
Allah's Justice
From Allah's justice is that He does not punish except for a sin. He supports His prophet and His religion, even if the disbelievers dislike it.
The Hypocrite's Sign
Worship in times of ease, apostasy in times of trial — "He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the clear loss."
Page 334 · Al-Ḥajj 16–23
Contemplation Insights: Allah's Will & Decree
Key Reflections
Guidance is in Allah's hand — do not grieve over the disobedient
Allah's watchfulness encompasses all actions and conditions of His servants
All creations submit to Allah by destiny; believers submit in obedience
Punishment is destined for disbelievers; mercy is affirmed for the obedient
Verse Insight
"And thus We have sent it down as clear signs, and that Allah guides whom He wills."
Contemplation of the Qur'ān is a path to guidance. Allah's will and absolute decree are affirmed — He does what He wishes and guides whom He wills.
Page 335 · Al-Ḥajj 24–30
Contemplation Insights: The Sacred House & Ḥajj
1
Sanctity of the Sanctuary
Extra caution against sins in the Sacred House — one is held accountable merely for intending sin therein. "And whoever intends [to commit] any blasphemy within it — the wrong by pain of a penalty."
2
Obstructing Allah's Path
Obstructing the Sacred Mosque — made for all people equally, resident and visitor — necessitates painful punishment.
3
Mosques for Worship Alone
Abraham was commanded: "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand in prayer and those who bow and prostrate."
The benefits of Ḥajj return to people both worldly and in the hereafter. Gratitude for blessings necessitates kindness towards the weak.
Page 336 · Al-Ḥajj 31–38
Contemplation Insights: Honoring Allah's Symbols
Honor Allah's Symbols Inwardly & Outwardly
"And whoever honors the symbols of Allah — indeed, it is from the piety of hearts." Avoid trivializing them in any form.
Remembrance is the Greatest Purpose of Worship
"For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]." A servant should always remember this great purpose.
Patience in Misfortune
Do not resent misfortunes; be patient seeking the countenance of your Lord, expecting His reward and awaiting His compensation. "And the patient over what befalls them."
Using parables to make abstract concepts tangible is a great educational method. Kindness leads to happiness, and faith is a reason for Allah's defense of the servant.
Page 337 · Al-Ḥajj 39–46
Contemplation Insights: Jihad & Heart Blindness
Three Core Lessons
Divine Support for Supporters of Religion
"Indeed, Allah will support those who support Him." Establishing religion is the reason for Allah's support for His believing servants.
Allah Gives Respite to Oppressors
"So how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong — so it is [now] fallen into ruin."
Heart Blindness vs. Eye Blindness
"For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts."
Key Reflections
Affirming Allah's attributes of strength and dignity
Affirming the legitimacy of Jihad to protect places of worship
Heart blindness prevents contemplation of Allah's signs
Page 338 · Al-Ḥajj 47–55
Contemplation Insights: Preservation of the Qur'ān
Divine Preservation
Allah preserves His Book from alteration and distortion, deflecting the schemes of the devil's minions away from it.
Deadly Diseases
Hypocrisy and heartlessness are two deadly diseases. Luring the oppressor into further oppression to punish him with greater punishment is a divine norm.
Faith & Knowledge
Faith is the fruit of knowledge, and humility and submission to Allah's commands are the fruit of faith.
Page 339 · Al-Ḥajj 56–64
Contemplation Insights: Migration & Allah's Support
On Migration for Allah's Cause
"And those who emigrated for the cause of Allah and then were killed or died — Allah will surely provide for them a good provision. And indeed, Allah is the best of providers."
On Truth vs. Falsehood
"That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood." Any call established to unite upon other than Allah's methodology is false.
Key reflections: the status and virtues of migration in Islam; the permissibility of retaliation in kind; Allah's support for the wronged may come in this world or the hereafter; and affirmation of Allah's high attributes — knowledge, hearing, sight, and supremacy.
Page 340 · Al-Ḥajj 65–72
Contemplation Insights: Allah's Blessings & Blind Following
Key Reflections
Among Allah's blessings: the subjugation of what is in the heavens and earth for humanity
Affirmation of Allah's attributes of compassion and mercy
Blind following is the reason polytheists cling to associating partners with Allah
Three Lessons
Pride in the religion is a reason for steadfastness: "Invite to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance."
Proper manners in dialogue: respond to truth-seekers differently than the obstinate.
The Qur'ān's greatness is evident by the disbelievers' inability to refute it — "you recognize in the faces of those who disbelieve disapproval."
Page 341 · Al-Ḥajj 73–78
Contemplation Insights: Magnifying Allah
01
Magnify Allah in Your Heart
"They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Mighty." Let love and fear of Allah reflect in your actions.
02
Cling to Allah Alone
"And hold firmly to Allah. He is your protector; what an excellent protector and what an excellent helper." Those who cling to others perish and lose.
03
Strive with True Striving
"And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him." Righteous deeds require struggle, patience, effort, and hardship — so be patient with that.
The importance of parables to clarify meanings is a noble educational method. Associating partners with Allah stems from not magnifying Him properly. The incapacity of idols to create even the slightest thing proves their incapacity to create anything.
Sūrah al-Mu'minūn
Introduction to Sūrah al-Mu'minūn
Sūrah al-Mu'minūn opens with eleven verses collectively describing the believers and their reward. It begins with glad tidings of success for believers (verse 1) and closes by affirming that disbelievers will not prosper (verse 117) — a powerful bookend establishing its central contrast.
Sūrah al-Mu'minūn
The Connection Between the Two Sūrahs
1
Promise of Success
Al-Ḥajj concludes commanding prayer, zakāt, and good deeds, promising success — realized at the opening of al-Mu'minūn.
2
Initial Creation
Both Sūrahs discuss the initial creation as evidence for resurrection and final judgment.
3
Stories of Prophets
Each Sūrah includes stories of past prophets and their nations, providing lessons for present and future generations.
4
Proofs of Oneness
Both Sūrahs present proofs of the Creator's existence and His Oneness through cosmic signs and divine blessings.
Sūrah al-Mu'minūn
Main Themes of Sūrah al-Mu'minūn
Traits of the Believers
Commending believers on their excellent traits — described in three places within the Sūrah (verses 1–9, 57–61, and 118).
Affirming Monotheism
Affirming monotheism, invalidating polytheism, and undermining its principles while highlighting faith and its laws.
Criticism of Disbelievers
Stern criticism of disbelievers by mentioning their final abode and the devastating outcomes of rejecting the prophets' calls.
Denial of Prophethood
Al-Shāṭibī notes: the Sūrah's structure predominantly focuses on the disbelievers' denial of prophethood on the basis of humanity — then clarifies what humanity must be to deserve divine selection.

Contemplation Insights: The Successful Believers
Three Lessons
Allah promises success — worldly and in the hereafter — to those characterized by these traits: "Indeed, the believers have succeeded" (23:1).
Trustworthiness is a great virtue: "And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive" (23:8).
To attain success, maintain punctuality in prayers: "And those who are observant of their prayers" (23:9).
Key Reflections
For success, there are various causes worth knowing and adhering to
Gradation in creation and legislation is a divine norm
Allah's encompassing knowledge of His creations
Page 342 · Al-Mu'minūn 18–27
Contemplation Insights: Rain, Prophethood & Noah
Allah's Kindness Through Rain
Allah's kindness to His servants is evident in sending down rain and facilitating its benefits. The olive tree is highlighted for its special status.
Worship Allah Alone
"Worship Allah, you have no deity other than Him" (23:23). Community leaders play a significant role in leading toward good or evil — strive for their righteousness.
Lineage Does Not Save
Do not rely on lineage — it does not save from Allah's punishment. Allah's support for His messengers is confirmed when their nations deny them.
Page 342 · Al-Mu'minūn 28–42
Contemplation Insights: Gratitude & the Messengers
Praise Allah When Saved
"So when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, 'Praise be to Allah, who has saved us from the wrongdoing people'" (23:28). Never forget gratitude after calamity.
Contemplate the Stories of the Messengers
Allah mentioned them for the lessons and warnings they hold: "Indeed, in that are signs" (23:30). Indulgence in worldly pleasures leads to negligence toward the truth.
Punishment for Oppressors is Imminent
"He said, 'In a little while, they will surely become regretful'" (23:40). Injustice leads to estrangement from Allah's mercy — even if time prolongs.
Page 342 · Al-Mu'minūn 43–59
Contemplation Insights: Pure Food & Monotheism
Key Reflections
Arrogance is a barrier to receiving the truth
Pure food contributes to the heart's and action's righteousness
Monotheism is the creed of all prophets and their message
Allah's blessings on the wicked are not an honor but a form of delusion
Three Lessons
Stick to consuming good foods and engaging in righteous deeds: "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness" (23:51).
Beware: blessings might be a form of delusion — "Do they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children is [because] We hasten for them good things?" (23:55–56).
Don't be complacent about righteous deeds; remain fearful of Allah (23:57).
Page 342 · Al-Mu'minūn 60–74
Contemplation Insights: Fear & the Heart
Fear of Non-Acceptance
The believer fears their good deeds not being accepted: "And those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will return to their Lord."
Sins Envelop the Heart
Sins cause the heart to be enveloped in confusion and disarray. Abandoning them is a reason for its safety and health.
Ignorance & Blind Imitation
One of the reasons for people's diversion from the truth is the engulfment of ignorance, bigotry, and the blindness of imitation. Luxury is a barrier to steadfastness.
The lifting of obligation beyond one's capacity is a mercy to the servants. The human mind's inability to grasp many benefits is a reminder of our dependence on divine guidance.
Page 342 · Al-Mu'minūn 75–89
Contemplation Insights: Lordship Without Worship
Increase Worship in Affliction
"And We have certainly seized them with punishment, but they did not humble themselves to their Lord, nor did they invoke Him with submission." Increase worship and supplication when afflictions increase.
Beware of Continued Disobedience
Beware of the increased descent of Allah's punishment if you continue in disobedience — until "when We opened for them a door of severe punishment, immediately they were therein in despair."
Acknowledging Lordship is Not Enough
They acknowledge Allah's sole lordship when asked, yet do not act upon this acknowledgment. Acknowledgment of God's lordship without acknowledgment of His divinity does not save one.
Page 342 · Al-Mu'minūn 90–104
Contemplation Insights: Repelling Evil & the Hereafter
1
Repel Evil with What is Best
"Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe." Treating the wrongdoer with kindness is a noble Islamic ethic with significant impact.
2
The Moment of Death
Do not be heedless of that significant hour when the disbeliever wishes to return: "My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." — but it is too late.
3
Lineages Severed on Judgment Day
"So when the Horn is blown, no lineage will there be among them that day, nor will they ask about one another." Seek refuge in Allah from Satan's whispers.
The stability of the universe's system is evidence of Allah's Oneness. Allah's encompassing knowledge of everything is affirmed throughout these verses.
Closing Reflection
The Unified Call of Day 17
Revere Allah
Honor what He has made of great importance — sacred places, sacred times, and the sacred rites of Ḥajj.
Worship Allah Alone
Adorn yourself with the qualities of righteousness — the very traits that define the successful believers of Sūrah al-Mu'minūn.
Strive & Be Patient
"And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him." Righteous deeds require struggle, patience, and effort — so hold firmly to Allah, your protector and helper.
Remember: "And hold firmly to Allah. He is your protector; what an excellent protector and what an excellent helper." — Al-Ḥajj 78
